The YMCA of Kanawha Valley is proud to honor Andy and Margo Teeter as the 2025 Spirit of the Valley recipients, recognizing their shared legacy of service, philanthropy, and leadership that has enriched the Kanawha Valley and beyond.
Andy and Margo were married in August 1979 and have spent the past four decades working side by side to build a stronger, more compassionate community. Their service, rooted in humility, integrity, and an unwavering belief in giving back, has touched countless lives across West Virginia.
Andy, a West Virginian by choice, was born and raised in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. From 1964 to 1967, he served as the personal golf caddy for President Dwight D. Eisenhower. After graduating from Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia in 1971 Andy worked for an insurance agency for 5 years in Roanoke that specialized in bonding and insuring contractors. His work there was noticed by Gaston Caperton who recruited him to move to Charleston in 1976 to work at McDonough Caperton Insurance Group. It was Gaston who encouraged Andy to become involved in the community, advice he took to heart and turned into a lifelong mission of service.
Andy was active at the inception of the Fund for the Arts and later President, this led to involvement in what is now The Clay Center including chairing the building committee before and during construction and later becoming the 3rd Chairman of the Board of the Clay Center. He is currently on the board of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Roanoke College Boad. Active fundraiser for the Buckskin Council and the YMCA of Kanawha Valley Spirit of the Valley. These are just a few of the many boards and organizations that have benefited from his steady leadership and deep community commitment.
Margo, a Charleston native, graduated from West Virginia University in 1972 with a degree in Dental Hygiene. She is one of seven siblings, each a proud WVU graduate, and comes from a family deeply committed to health and education, with two brothers, two nieces, and a nephew all graduates of the WVU School of Dentistry. Margo was in the inaugural class of women honored with the YWCA Woman of Achievement Award in 1997 and has spent more than 40 years as one of Old Colony’s top realtors, earning consistent recognition for her professional excellence and dedication to clients. Margo was the longest member of the City of Charleston Municipal Planning Commission serving from 1986 to 2024.
Together, Andy and Margo have remained deeply engaged in causes that strengthen their community. They are longtime, active members of St. George Orthodox Cathedral, where faith and service guide their daily lives. The couple has also established two meaningful scholarships: one at West Virginia University for a West Virginia student pursuing a career in dental hygiene or dentistry, and another at the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation for a Kanawha Valley student attending Roanoke College.
Whether through the arts, education, healthcare, or spiritual and civic engagement, Andy and Margo Teeter have modeled what it means to live with purpose and compassion. Their devotion to the YMCA’s mission of strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility has been unwavering.
The YMCA of Kanawha Valley is honored to recognize Andy and Margo Teeter with the 2025 Spirit of the Valley Award, a testament to their remarkable partnership and enduring impact on our region.
